Leading online wristwatch retailer, Watchco.com, is celebrating along with Bulova the 50th anniversary this year of the Bulova's Accutron watch. Woodside, NY based Bulova Watches introduced Accutron in 1960.

Accutron was a significant development in timekeeping technology. It was the first electronic watch and although Accutron's tuning fork technology was made obsolete by quartz technology in the 1970s it was an integral part of NASA's space program throughout the 1960s. An Accutron timing device was left in the moon's "Sea of Tranquility" by Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong to control the transmissions of data to the earth.

Bulova's Accutron technology utilized a tiny tuning fork which oscillated with an electric current. These nearly perfectly constant oscillations were divided into oscillations per second and used to measure time against. Although Accutron watches are still around and selling quite well, most of them now carry quartz movements or traditional mechanical movements.

In the Fall of 2010 however, Bulova will release a limited edition Accutron Watch with a faithfully recreated tuning fork movement. It's pricetag of $4000 exceeds the $125 charged for the original, but will be limited to 1000 pieces. Many have already been preordered and Bulova expects them to sell out quickly.

Watchco.com has been selling Bulova and Accutron watches since 1993. They carry a complete selection of both product lines and are currently offering a free gift and free shipping with every Accutron watch purchased. Bulova offers a complete selection of men's watches and women's watches in a large variety of styles including dive watches, dress watches and automatic watches.
